Adenoidectomy – removal of the pharyngeal tonsil
Adenoidectomy involves cutting off the mass of the enlarged tonsil. It is recommended that the procedure be performed under general anesthesia, ensuring the child’s safety, eliminating stress, and ensuring the precision of the procedure. The pharyngeal tonsil (also known as the third tonsil) is located in the nasal part of the throat. The pharyngeal tonsil is not visible when examined through the mouth; it is located at the back of the nose and is visible through the nose or when examined with a mirror.

Adenoidectomy – disturbing symptoms and indications for the procedure
If a child frequently breathes through their mouth, has a constantly open mouth, and a somewhat gaping facial expression, and snores or breathes loudly at night, they wake up tired in the morning. They may be lethargic during the day. They sometimes lose their appetite. They may experience prolonged runny noses, recurrent ear infections, and hearing loss. Their voice becomes nasal, as if they have a dumpling in their mouth.
The most common cause is an enlarged third pharyngeal tonsil. This enlargement narrows the nasal and upper respiratory tract. It also impairs the function of the Eustachian tubes, which contributes to effusions and middle ear infections. Problems with the paranasal sinuses can also occur, sometimes in a specific sinus, such as the maxillary sinus. Adenoids in children often enlarge as a result of bacterial or viral infections.
If drug therapy is ineffective, an otolaryngologist may suggest surgery. The goal is to remove the enlarged tonsil. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia, although the decision regarding anesthesia is made individually.
The postoperative period is usually short. Pain medication and a restful routine are necessary. Minor bleeding is possible, but usually subsides quickly.
