Ear correction – course of the procedure and convalescence
Ear correction is one of the most commonly performed procedures in facial plastic surgery. It aims to improve the shape, position or proportion of the auricles. The most common procedure is performed for protruding ears. Otoplasty is aesthetic in nature, but its effect often has a clear impact on the patient’s self-confidence and daily comfort – whether child or adult.
What does ear correction involve?
The procedure involves reshaping the auricle cartilage in such a way that the ears achieve a more natural, symmetrical and harmonious position in relation to the head. The most common indication is protruding ears, which is usually due to either an abnormally formed contralateral fold or excessive depth of the ear cup.
Ear plastics can include reducing the angle of the auricle, restoring normal cartilage folds, correcting asymmetry and improving the shape of ears after trauma.
Consultation and qualification for the procedure
Every ear operation is preceded by a detailed consultation with a plastic surgeon. During the visit, the structure of the auricle, the degree of protrusion of the ears and their symmetry are assessed. The patient’s expectations, treatment plan, type of anaesthesia, as well as possible outcomes and complications are also discussed.
Course of protruding ears
Ear plastics are usually performed under local anaesthetic, although in some cases a different type of anaesthetic may be indicated. The treatment usually lasts between 60 and 120 minutes.
Small incisions are made in the natural fold of skin behind the ear, so that scars remain barely visible. The auricle cartilage is then modelled and its new position fixed with special sutures. Finally, a sterile dressing is applied.
Recovery after ear correction
Recovery from the correction of protruding ears is usually smooth and without major discomfort. Immediately after the operation, there may be moderate pain, swelling and tenderness in the ear area. These symptoms usually disappear within a few days.
For the first few days after the procedure, it is necessary to wear a special dressing and then an elastic bandage to stabilise the auricles and protect them from trauma. The band is recommended especially at night for several weeks.
The stitches are usually removed after about 7-14 days and a return to daily activities is possible relatively quickly.

The effects produced by before and after ear plasty are long-lasting and satisfying for the vast majority of patients. The ears achieve a more natural position and their shape becomes harmonious and proportionate to the face. As a result, the treatment has a clear impact on appearance and well-being.
