Causes of gill pocket fistula – congenital malformations

Gill pocket fistula is a congenital developmental anomaly resulting from abnormal tissue development during fetal life. In normal embryogenesis, the gill arches and pockets should fuse together, but if this fails, small ducts or depressions in the neck remain. The congenital defect often occurs bilaterally.
