What is an epigastric hernia?

A supra-abdominal hernia is a specific type of hernia that occurs in the abdominal cavity, particularly in the region of the white crease where the abdominal muscles come together. This pathological protrusion of abdominal contents through an opening in the abdominal lining can lead to various health problems that often require surgical intervention.

The main causes of supra-abdominal hernia include:

  • weakening of the abdominal tissue,
  • mechanical injuries,
  • lifting heavy objects,
  • factors related to pregnancy and childbirth,
  • obesity and age.

Treatment of this condition usually requires an operation called an epigastric hernia repair. During this procedure, doctors repair the damaged area and restore the normal abdominal anatomy. In some cases, surgical mesh may be necessary for additional tissue support.

Causes and symptoms of an epigastric hernia

A supra-abdominal hernia is most often due to weakness of the abdominal muscles, which can be caused by a variety of factors. Among them are:

  • obesity,
  • pregnancy,
  • chronic cough,
  • constipation

People struggling with excess weight have abdominal tissue that is more susceptible to stretching and damage. On the other hand, during pregnancy there is an increase in tension in the abdominal cavity, which also promotes the formation of a hernia.

The main symptoms of an epigastric hernia include:

  • pain in the upper abdomen,
  • a pulling sensation,
  • A palpable lump in the bulge during exercise.

When a hernia becomes incarcerated, the discomfort becomes much more intense. Severe pain and symptoms of intestinal obstruction, such as nausea or vomiting, may then occur.

Indications for supra-abdominal hernia surgery

Trans-abdominal hernia repair surgery is recommended in several key situations. Above all, when the hernia becomes irreducible, meaning that it cannot be pushed back into the abdominal cavity. Advanced hernias and extensive tissue dissection that does not respond to other treatments are also indications for the procedure. Surgery is also recommended for intense abdominal pain or symptoms of intestinal obstruction such as nausea or vomiting . Chronic discomfort and visible protrusion in the abdomen are further reasons for surgical intervention. Such a condition can lead to the entrapment of internal organs, which carries the risk of serious health complications, such as intestinal necrosis.

Surgical methods in the plastic surgery of supra-abdominal hernias

In the case of supra-abdominal hernia repair, there are a number of different surgical methods that can be adapted to each patient’s specific needs. The most popular techniques are:

laparoscopy
traditional open surgery.

Our specialists, thanks to their experience and modern medical equipment, can and do operate on several hernias at the same time.

Laparoscopy in the treatment of an epigastric hernia

Laparoscopy is a low-invasive method. It involves inserting a camera and surgical instruments through small incisions in the abdomen, making the procedure less painful and recovery time much shorter. Many patients return to daily activities just a few days after surgery. Medical robots are also increasingly being used in the modern approach to hernia hernia repair. This technology increases the precision of the procedure and minimises the risk of complications, making it increasingly popular due to its many advantages.

Traditional open surgery

Open surgery is a method that requires a larger incision and is mainly used for large hernias or when laparoscopy is not possible. The procedure is carried out under general anaesthesia, ensuring patient comfort. The main advantage of this technique is better visibility of anatomical structures, which facilitates precise intervention. Recovery takes longer and intense exercise should be limited for several weeks. The choice of treatment method should be consulted with a specialist to tailor the therapy to the patient’s condition.

Recovery after supra-abdominal hernia repair

Recovery from supra-abdominal hernia surgery is crucial for recovery. Rest is essential for the first few days and exercise should be avoided for 4-6 weeks. After a few weeks, it is advisable to start rehabilitation, including exercises to strengthen the abdominal muscles, preferably under the supervision of a specialist.

Complications following epigastric hernia repair

Complications following supra-abdominal hernia repair can pose a serious health risk to the patient. The most common complications include infection, which can occur within the surgical wound, and bleeding, which sometimes requires additional surgical intervention. There is also a risk of hernia recurrence, which can occur despite the procedure performed. It is therefore extremely important to follow the doctor’s instructions after surgery and to have regular health checks.
