Treatments

Surgical nose correction is performed for aesthetic or medical reasons. Depending on the desired results, surgery is carried out on the bony part (in the case of a crooked or humped nose) and on the cartilaginous part (when it is too wide, asymmetrical or its tip is too protruding/falling). 

There are also cases in which the nose, in addition to interfering with facial harmony, performs its physiological functions in a limited way. These problems are usually related to a crooked septum or sinuses. It is important to note that during aesthetic nose correction, a FESS procedure (i.e. widening of the sinus mouth) can be performed at the same time as the correction of a crooked septum and other septal abnormalities. 

To ensure that the nose looks natural and meets the patient’s expectations, it is important to plan the procedure well, taking into account all the biological features of the face to be operated on, such as the elevation of the cheeks, the jawline and the overall dimensions of the nose. 

 Anaesthesia and course of surgery

Nose correction surgery can be performed under local or general anaesthesia and lasts between 90 and 120 minutes, depending on the extent of the operation, and requires a one-day hospital stay. During the procedure, the skin from the nasal area is separated from the cartilaginous structure, then the nose is moulded to the desired shape. 

At the end of the operation, a thermoplastic immobilising dressing is applied to the nose. To prevent possible bleeding, small dressings (setons) are placed inside the nostrils, which, depending on whether or not the septum has been operated on, are removed on the first day or the day after the operation. If sutures are placed in natural skin folds, they are removed after a few days. The immobilising dressing is usually removed after 7-14 days. 

Most cuts are located inside the nose. The only external cut is located at the nose post. This cut usually heals very well and is ultimately invisible. When the correction requires narrowing of the front nostrils, the cut is hidden where the wings of the nose touch the cheeks.

 Recovery

There may be some swelling or bruising in the face for the first few days after the procedure, but this usually disappears after 10-14 days. The last follow-up appointment is set for six months after the operation, but it is necessary to wait about 12 months for the final result.
