Removal of foreign bodies from the nose

Foreign bodies in the nose are a problem that most commonly affects children, but can also occur in adults. Even a seemingly small object can cause pain, bleeding and, if left in the nasal cavity for too long, lead to infection or long-term tissue damage. Therefore, the problem must not be underestimated.

In such a situation, it is necessary to consult an ENT doctor, who will safely perform the foreign body removal procedure using specialised instruments and endoscopy.

Foreign body in the nose – symptoms

Symptoms depend on the type of foreign body and the time elapsed since its introduction. The most common of these are:

unilateral rhinitis or nasal congestion,
Blood flowing from one nostril,
pain or pressure in the nose,
foul-smelling nasal discharge,
tearing, sneezing, headache.

If a foreign body is left in the nasal cavity for a prolonged period of time, it can lead to infection and even long-term complications, so prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial for patient safety.

What is the procedure for removing a foreign body from the nose?

During the visit, the ENT specialist carries out a history and examination to locate the foreign body and assess the condition of the mucous membrane. Then, using specialised medical instruments, he performs the procedure to remove it.
Usually, the procedure takes place in the ENT surgery and, in special cases, in the operating theatre. Local anaesthesia may be used for patient comfort.
After the procedure, the doctor assesses for trauma or infection and, if necessary, orders drug treatment (e.g. anti-inflammatories or antibiotics), as well as further ENT follow-up.

Safety – why you should not remove a foreign body yourself

Attempts to remove a foreign body from the nose on their own can lead to serious tissue damage, displacement of the object deep into the nasal cavity and the subsequent need for a more invasive ENT procedure.
To avoid trauma, infection and complications, if a foreign body is suspected, contact a medical doctor immediately.
