Sympatectomy – an effective surgical treatment for hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis – an excessive sweating problem that makes life difficult

Sweating is a natural physiological process that we cannot control by willpower. It is the body’s thermoregulatory mechanism to avoid overheating. Increased sweating occurs in situations of increased physical exertion, in high temperatures, during emotional arousal and after eating hot or spicy food. Sweat glands distributed throughout the body are responsible for the process of sweat secretion.

However, in the case of excessive sweating, we are already talking about a medical problem, referred to as hyperhidrosis. This condition can have a significant impact on patients’ daily functioning, causing discomfort for both aesthetic and hygienic reasons. Hyperhidrosis can affect the hands, armpits and face, and rarely occurs simultaneously in all these areas. In addition, it is worth finding the causes of hyperhidrosis.

Available treatment methods for hyperhidrosis

Patients suffering from hyperhidrosis often first turn to antiperspirants and blockers , which reduce perspiration by closing the sweat gland outlets. Although such methods are sometimes effective for mild symptoms, in cases of more severe sweating their effect is limited and unsustainable.

One popular treatment for excessive sweating is botulinum toxin injection. In Medicus Clinic, the procedure is performed by dr. Joanna Stoch-Stój doctor of aesthetic medicine . This treatment consists of injecting the toxin into areas affected by excessive perspiration (e.g. armpits, hands). The toxin temporarily blocks the action of the nerves responsible for hyperhidrosis, thus effectively reducing sweating. The effect of the treatment lasts for several months.

Sympatectomy – an effective solution to hyperhidrosis

In cases where none of the alternative treatments are satisfactory, sympathectomy – the surgical treatment of hyperhidrosis – may be used. It is an invasive method of treatment, involving the disruption of the sympathetic trunk or the destruction of the part of the sympathetic trunk that is responsible for the excessive stimulation of the sweat glands.

Sympathectomy can be performed by the classic method or by endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy(ets procedure). The most common procedure is thoracic sympathectomy, which is effective in treating hyperhidrosis of the hands and armpits. The procedure takes place under general anaesthesia and involves interrupting nerve conduction in the relevant ganglia of the sympathetic trunk.

The sympathectomy procedure provides a permanent reduction in excessive sweating and is considered safe , although it carries some risk of complications, such as compensatory sweating of other body parts. Nevertheless, for many patients it provides an effective and permanent solution to hyperhidrosis.

Thoracic sympathectomy – how does the procedure work?

Thoracic sympathectomy is a surgical procedure used to treat hyperhidrosis of the hands and armpits.

It involves cutting or blocking the sympathetic nerves in the thorax that c ontrol the activity of the sweat glands.
This procedure is performed endoscopically , which minimises the risk of complications and shortens the recovery time.
The procedure is carried out under general anaesthesia , and the effect is permanent, although it may lead to compensatory sweating in other parts of the body.

Sympathectomy procedure – key information

Hyperhidrosis can significantly impede patients’ daily functioning, but the available treatments can effectively combat it. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, conservative methods such as antiperspirants, drug treatment or botulinum toxin can be used. If other treatments are not effective, it is worth considering surgical treatment of hyperhidrosis through a sympathectomy procedure , which can provide lasting results and improve patients’ quality of life.
